Welcome to the Indiana Dunes, where opportunities to hit the trails with your pet are right around the corner! From the Indiana Dunes National Park, the 5th most biodiverse national park in the country, to the Indiana Dunes State Park, to preserves and trails managed by Shirley Heinze Land Trust and more, finding a trail that suits your needs is the easy part! Before you head out for your adventure, make sure you’ve checked off this list to keep your "B.A.R.K. Ranger" safe.

Before you go:
  • Make sure your pet is protected from parasites before you hit the trails. Ticks, and the diseases they carry, are a year-round danger in the Indiana Dunes. Make sure your pet is up to date on their monthly parasite preventions, and make sure they have good tick coverage! If you’re not sure, please ask our staff for a recommendation.
  • Check the weather and plan your trip accordingly. On hot and sunny days, sandy trails and beaches can burn your pet’s paw pads, so bringing foot protection or choosing a different route may be necessary.
  • Consider microchipping your pet, and if they are microchipped, make sure your contact information is up to date. Microchipping provides a permanent form of identification to help reunite them with their owners as soon as possible, especially if they lose their collar or tags.

Choose dog-friendly trails:
  • Before hitting the trails, research and choose routes that allow dogs. Some popular dog-friendly trails include the Cowles Bog Trail, the West Beach Trail, and the Dune Ridge Trail. These trails offer stunning views of the dunes and Lake Michigan while providing a safe and enjoyable experience for your furry companion. Find more pet-friendly trails in the region.

What to bring:
  • Pack plenty of water, snacks, and waste bags for your pet, and make sure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and is wearing a collar with ID tags, just in case they get loose.

Respect Wildlife and Other Visitors:
  • While exploring the Indiana Dunes, it's crucial to respect the natural environment and wildlife. Keep your dog on a leash at all times to prevent them from disturbing wildlife or other visitors. Be mindful of any signs or regulations regarding pet access, and always clean up after your dog to help maintain the cleanliness of our shared spaces. Please practice leave-no-trace principles anytime you visit these special places!

Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks:

  • Hiking and exploring can be tiring for both you and your dog, especially on hot days. Remember to take frequent breaks in shaded areas, offer your dog plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Pay attention to your dog's behavior, and if they show signs of fatigue or overheating, it's time to take a break and rest.

Safety First:

  • Finally, always prioritize safety when exploring nature with your dog. Keep an eye out for potential hazards such as sharp rocks, toxic plants, or wildlife encounters. Be prepared for emergencies by carrying a first aid kit and knowing the location of the nearest veterinary clinic or emergency services.
Exploring the Indiana Dunes with your dog can be an unforgettable experience filled with adventure, bonding, and stunning natural beauty. Grab your best friend, pack your bags, and get ready to create lasting memories in the stunning landscapes of the Indiana Dunes with your beloved companion.
